R&S Transmitter Test solutions
The high-performance R&S®FSW signal and spectrum analyzer was developed to meet demanding customer requirements. Offering low phase noise, wide analysis bandwidth, fast measurements and straight forward and intuitive operation, this analyzer makes measurements fast and easy, including specific measurement critical for 802.11ac such as:
- Spectrum Mask 1 (Example 1)
- Spectrum Mask 2 (Example 2)
- Spectral Flatness
- Relative Constellation Error (RCE)
- Symbol Clock Frequency Tolerance
- 802.11ac Center Frequency Leakage
R&S®FSW-K91/-K91n/-K91ac Application Firmware for the R&S®FSW Spectrum Analyzer

The R&S®FSW-K91/-K91n/-K91ac application firmware packages expand the application range of the R&S®FSW signal and spectrum analyzer by adding the capability to perform spectrum and modulation measurements on signals in accordance with the WLAN IEEE 802.11a/b/g/j/n/ac standard.

Spectrum Analyzer considerations for 802.11ac Transmitter Tests
Spectrum Analyzer considerations for 802.11ac Transmitter Tests
A spectrum/signal analyzer is typically used to make transmitter measurements. For 802.11ac, key specifications to keep in mind are:
- Wide bandwidth: 80 MHz bandwidth is mandatory and 160 MHz is optional. An analyzer, such as the R&S FSW that supports 160 MHz is a smart choice for ensuring support for future 160 MHz 11ac devices.
- Speed: Ability to make fast measurements is important so that time is not wasted waiting for the test equipment to provide the results needed. The R&S K91 option provides the fast measurement times test engineers want. Since K91 is an internal firmware option, it is also easy and fast to change measurement settings as needed. The FSW also features fast sweep time and list mode for reduced manufacturing throughput time.
- Phase noise and dynamic range: These spectrum analyzer parameters impact many measurements including EVM. Since 11ac mandates support for wide bandwidths and higher order MCS (Modulation and Coding Schemes), 11ac EVM measurements can be challenging. The R&S FSW phase noise and dynamic range performance is unparalleled and will measure EVM accurately and easily.
- Flexibility: The FSW is a Multi Standard Radio Analyzer. This means that several measurement applications can be viewed at once which is increasingly important as WLAN is added to devices (such as smart phones) that support multiple technologies (LTE, GSM, CDMA)
- Residual EVM: For 11ac's 256 QAM signal this is an important parameter. A general rule of thumb is that the test equipment's residual EVM should be about 10 dB better than the specification requires. Once again, the R&S FSW answers these testing needs.
- Ease of use: The test engineer's time should be spent measuring the device performance not reading the test equipment manuals. The FSW has a touch screen and an intuitive user interface.
